Welcome to Social and Environmental Indicators for Water Quality Project Evaluation
Purdue University is working with IDEM to develop indicators that can be used to evaluate the success of nonpoint source projects. Indicators are for assessing the impacts of watershed planning and implementation projects on social outcomes such as knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of watershed residents and stakeholders, and environmental outcomes such as the effect of implemented management practices on water quality. The indicators and evaluation framework will enable Indiana’s Nonpoint Source Program to learn from mistakes, build on successes, and provide a process to identify and modify existing implementation approaches and processes.
Workshops
Workshops will be held at the following locations and times to gather input from stakeholders on what indicators are the most useful and the most feasible to collect. Everyone working on reducing non-point source pollution is invited. Lunch will be provided for those who pre-register. See the Workshop Flyer for more information (flyer)

Social Indicators
The development of social indicators is being carried out in collaboration with other states and universities in EPA Region 5 through a regional social indicators project. The indicators have been selected through a participatory process throughout the region. A report has been developed (Summary) that includes a brief project description and the results of the indicator selection process.
Environmental Indicators
The environmental indicators process has started by establishing a process for inventorying water quality monitoring. This will help us to determine to what extent existing monitoring can be used. Future activities include collecting landscape-level in several watersheds where the social indicators are being collected.
As this project develops we will be udpating this site, so check back!
