Success Stories

> 4-H in Scott County Classrooms

Many children are unable to participate in the Scott County 4-H program due to low income or they may not have transportation to and from local meetings. The Scott County Extension Service has worked diligently to involve more youth at risk through the local schools and actually completing projects during the school day. In 2007 three hundred ninety-eight (398) students submitted 4-H projects and in 2008 five hundred and twenty-four (524) students completed at least one project. This is an increase of 32% in one year. With a local grant from the Scott County Foundation funding was made possible to purchase all supplies needed to cover expenses in 2008 and has been awarded again for 2009. --Jackie Benham

> Scott County Master Gardener

Purdue Extension Scott County offered the Master Gardener Program as a 12-week course from January through March 2008. The Master Gardener Program is a statewide horticulture program that engages participants in education as well as volunteerism in the community. Participants in the course took a pre-test to gauge their knowledge prior to beginning the course and then a post-test at the end; the class averaged a 15.9% increase in knowledge gained from the course. As a result of the course, eight of the participants completed the necessary requirements to become Master Gardener Interns and all felt that the course was worth their time and money invested. --Jerene Gilliam
