When we and other researchers have asked
children about the main places where they have
learned about war and peace, they often list
school. Teachers may have a central role in
helping children understand these issues. It is
also possible that major international or inter-
group crises will erupt during school hours. When
that happens, teachers may need to help their
students understand those events. Teachers
may be expected to have on hand helpful
