Many
parents worry about their children’s learning. They want their young
children to be ready for public school. If the child is already in school,
they might want childcare providers to help with homework. Some parents
think childcare providers should give young children worksheets and teach
them numbers and letters. But many providers have learned that worksheets
are not good for young children. They believe that young children need
to learn through play. Some have learned that school-age children need
to get away from homework for a while at the end of the school day. They
might be using some learning activities that parents do not understand.
Learning can be a problem area for parents and providers, even though they all want to help the children. It is important for providers to work with parents to help the children learn in a way that fits their needs and development. Providers need to offer many ways for children to learn. Parents can support children’s learning at home, too. It is important to work together give children chances to work, play, discover, and grow. This section provides information about how children learn. It also offers ideas about how to explain learning activities to parents. There are also suggestions for ways providers can learn about helping a child by talking to parents. An
important topic is how to talk about children who are having problems
in development. Providers might notice problems before parents do. This
section gives ideas for talking to parents about those issues. |
