The Indiana Trial Court System

ORDER:
The Indiana Trial Court System

This manual contains five activities, a glossary, a bibliography, a list of Web-based resources, and an appendix for teachers that lists Indiana courts by county and provides the answers for the appropriate activities. The activity titles are:

  • What Do You Know About Your Court System?
The young people will learn who set up Indiana’s court system, what kinds of courts there are, and the differences between the various courts.
  • Exploring Your County’s Court System
This activity explores the differences between criminal and civil court cases and examines which courts handle which types of cases.
  • So You’re Going to Court, But Which One?
Students look through a list of 10 examples and decide which court would hear each case. The unit also examines alternative dispute resolution and plea bargaining.
  • How Good Are You at Resolving Disputes?
Students role play the characters in three disputes, and they must come to a group resolution of each dispute. This unit also explains the roles of all the participants in a court case: the lawyers, the judge, the bailiff, the court clerk, the court reporter, and the jury.
  • Your Day in Court – Mini-Trials
Students act out two trials, playing the roles of judge, plaintiff, and defendant. They base their roles on a set of facts that the manual provides for each case.
