Level One New program for youth plants seeds of gardening knowledge The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service is offering a Junior Master Gardener program that teaches youths skills and lessons they can harvest for a lifetime. "Youth explore many aspects of biology, not just gardening," says Kathryn Orvis, Indiana JMG program coordinator. "Through this 4-H program, students discover their world through fun and exciting activities that promote leadership development, responsibility, self-confidence and community involvement. Program topics can be applied over a lifetime." Orvis says the program targets third through fifth grade students, however, youths up to the 12th grade can participate. Students in public and home schools, as well as those in after-school programs and youth clubs, are eligible. The level one JMG curriculum includes eight different lessons that focus on plant growth and development, soils and water, ecology and environmental horticulture, insects and disease, landscape horticulture, fruits and nuts, vegetables and herbs, and life skills and career exploration. The lessons correspond with a youth handbook and a teacher and leader guide.
