Notes for the Program Presenter

Teaching plan for a 45 minute workshop (16 slides & notes).

  1. Print this section of the Healthy Homes booklet to use as handout material.
  2. Make copies of the Pesticides in the Home Pre-test and Post-test.
  3. At the beginning, distribute the Pre-Test. Ask the audience to take the quiz, telling them it is voluntary and anonymous. Have the completed tests passed to the back of the room, where they can be collected.

  4. A good way to bring this program to life is to display a variety of pesticides that are found in the home.
    • Take time to go over these with the audience and ask if anyone has any “stories” to tell about any of them.
    • Talk about some of the ways pesticides are used incorrectly in the home.
    • Include items like bug sprays, pet flea collars, rat or mouse poisons, and garden weed killers.
  5. Search the publications lists for your land grant university and see what publications the university has on safe use of pesticides. Used these for additional handouts.
  6. Another activity is to divide the audience up into small groups and give each group a common household pest that find their way into homes.
    • Give one group mice, another flies, another fleas, and so on.
    • Have them discuss ways to get rid of these intruders safely and things that can be done to keep them from getting back into the home.
    • Have each group report back to the audience.
  7. At the end of the program, distribute the Post-Test. Ask the audience to complete the test and leave it on a back table or chair as they leave the room. Inform them that the test is voluntary and anonymous, but the information will be used for program improvements and Extension reporting.
  8. Thank everyone for attending, and let them know that you are available for questions.
