Mold & Moisture
Teacher's Guide
Program Objectives

After participating in the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the three conditions required for mold to grow.
  • Describe five health effects of exposure to mold.
  • Name five sources of excess moisture in the home.
  • Describe the best ways to determine if mold is a problem.
  • Describe the process for cleaning up mold.

Notes to the Program Presenter

Teaching plan for a 45 minute workshop (17 slides & notes).

  1. Print this section of the Healthy Homes booklet to use for handout material.
  2. Make copies of the Mold and Moisture Pre-test and Post-test.

At the beginning, distribute the Pre-Test. Ask the audience to take the quiz, informing them that it is voluntary and anonymous. Have the completed tests passed to the back of the room, where they can be collected.
  3. Use the video, “Controlling Mold in the Home” available from the Healthy Indoor Air for America’s Web site for additional visuals. This video is part of the IAQ video sampler.
  4. Be ready to answer questions on testing for mold. It may be beneficial to gather additional background information from other resources, especially those from the Environmental Protection Agency.
  5. Another good resource for this program is the Mold Resource Guide, prepared by the Purdue Extension Service. This provides additional handouts and answers to Frequently Asked Questions as well as additional resources to use.
  6. At the end of the program, distribute the Post-Test. Ask the audience to complete the test and leave it on a back table or chair as they leave the room. Inform them that completion of the test is voluntary and anonymous, but the information will be used for program improvements and Extension reporting.
  7. Thank everyone for coming, and let them know that you are available for questions.
