Be Safe After the Disaster

It is not unusual for more people to be killed by carelessness and lack of attention to personal safety than are killed in the disaster itself.

Beware of outdoor hazards.  Assume all loose or downed power lines are live and report them immediately to the authorities.  Meanwhile keep away from them.

Before entering a building. Check for structural damage. Make sure it's not in danger of collapsing.  Turn off any outside gas lines, and let the house air for several minutes to remove escaping gas.  Don't use an open flame as a light source.  Use a battery-operated flashlight.

Check electrical source. Be sure all electric service is turned off before entering buildings for the first time.  Disconnect the main electrical switch and all circuits.

Many injuries and wounds occur during disaster clean up.  Be cautious and deliberate.  Wear protective clothing, including long pants, work boots and work gloves.
