Dear Master Gardeners,

Just a quick reminder:  the Holiday Recycling Day is this Saturday, January 5.  I’ve got about 30 people signed up, so if you haven’t signed up yet, don’t worry about it.  You can come down anyway with your recycling, if you want; and if you want to stick around and help, I won’t turn you away.

For those of you who did sign up:  Please dress accordingly for the weather!  It’s supposed to be in the upper 40s with a 30% chance of rain showers.

The Annual Garden Conference in Robinson, IL, will be January 26.  The theme is “A Winter Day in the Garden”.  Keynote speaker is Jon Carloftis, Garden Designer to the Stars.  Cost of the program is $35 if you register by January 11, $40 after.

SWIMGA member Kathy Salat has made arrangements with New Image Travel for a bus trip to the conference, leaving Evansville at 6:00 am (that’s morning, folks) on the 26th.  The cost of the bus trip will be $18.33 per person, plus a small tip.  The bus will leave from the Vanderburgh 4-H Center behind the activities building.

If you are interested in attending, call Kathy at 812-624-0232, or online at Katherine.Salat@insightbb.com .  Space is limited to the first 36 people who sign up.

The Gibson County Master Gardeners will be holding a seminar entitled “Once Upon a Garden” on Saturday, February 9. Registration begins at 7:45, and the program runs from 8:30 to 3:00.  It will be held at the Princeton Community High School auditorium.  Speakers include:

Larry Miller (Growing Azaleas)

Jerry Wheeler (Gardening for Wildlife)

Edie Dyer Wilson (Flower Arrangements – use the flowers you grow)

Carissa Lovett (Indiana’s spring wildflowers)

Wayne Richards and Judy Burris (Butterflies – Gardening With a Purpose)

Attendance is worth 5 hours of continuing education.

Cost of program is $35 if you register by January 25.  If you are interested in registering, call 812-385-4921 or 385-8486.

The Hoosier Hillsides Master Gardeners of Orange County will be holding a “Spring Tonic” workshop on March 1, at the county fairgrounds in Paoli, Indiana.  I have attached their flyer to this e-mail.  This program will count for 5 hours of Continuing Education if you care to go.

I hope to send out the registration packets for the Professional Landscape Management School by Friday.  If I don’t get them out by then, I’ll get to it first thing next week.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:

I was contacted by Jennifer Greathouse, Activities Director of New Harmonie Healthcare in New Harmony, Indiana.  She is interested in becoming a MG (yes, I sent her an application for next fall’s class).

Jennifer works with numerous people with disabilities, and has been slowly setting up a Handicapped Accessible Garden for the residents.  She hopes to open this to the public in the next year.  She has expressed interest in having some knowledgeable MGs provide some help and guidance for her, in such areas as starting seeds indoors, designing raised beds, etc.  I’m not under the impression she’s looking for a lot of heavy labor, but she admits to not having much of a gardening background.

If you would like to help her out this spring, please contact her directly at 812-682-4104.  I’ve got a lot of resources on accessible gardens if you need it.  Let me know if you can help her out.
