Land Use Home

  • Do you see the changes in your community?
  • Are traffic and congestion becoming a problem?
  • Is the farmland in your community being divided for housing?
  • Is the rural character of your community changing?
  • Are you concerned about how land use changes might be affecting your environment and quality of life?
  • Do you have concerns or questions about land use change?

    The Purdue Extension Land Use Team offers educational materials and programming to help you and your community tackle these problems and answer these questions. The team is composed of Extension educators and campus-based scientists working together to address land use issues in Indiana.

  • Scientists are conducting research and developing tools and materials local decision makers can use as they plan for future community growth.
  • Team members have developed educational materials and programs to
    help you and your local decision makers learn more about land use issues
    facing your community and the options and tradeoffs involved.
  • Extension educators are available to work with you and your neighbors as
    you consider the ever-changing land use issues facing your community.

Purdue Extension Land Use Programs

The Purdue Land Use Team offers these 11 educational programs to help citizens, local officials, and other groups explore and discuss current land use issues.

The Rural/Urban Conflict This program outlines some causes of conflict between farmers and non-farm rural residents, uses role-play exercises to explore conflict scenarios, and provides guidelines for cultivating better community relations.

Agricultural Land Protection This program identifies some factors involved in balancing economic growth with agriculture and natural resources, discusses some tools for protecting agricultural land, and provides specific steps for local action.

Land Use Lessons for Youth This program offers enjoyable, interactive experiences for young people to help them consider how current choices about land affect the future of their communities.

The Planning and Zoning Series These six lessons focus on the role of planning and zoning in land use decisions, including the critical work of plan commissions and local elected officials.

Citizen Participation in Land Use Planning This program helps citizens understand how to participate and helps officials learn how to involve citizens in land use planning.

The ABCs of P & Z: A Planning and Zoning Glossary This program defines and demystifies the special lingo and language often used in planning and zoning.

What Is the Plan Commission & How Does It Work? This program describes the creation and roles of plan commissions and how they perform their functions.

The Comprehensive Plan This program explains the most basic document in land use planning.

How Good Is Your Comprehensive Plan? This program encourages citizens to analyze and evaluate existing plans.

Zoning-What Does It Mean to Your Community? This program explores the pros and cons of zoning by pointing out what zoning can and can't do for a community.

Planning with POWER (Protecting Our Water and Environmental Resources) This state-wide educational program links land use planning with watershed and natural resources planning at the local level. Through this program, communities can choose how much involvement and help they require to address their interests and needs.
