IDNR State Big Tree Register

The Lafayette Tree Advisory Committee is starting a search for the biggest trees in Tippecanoe County.  These are trees that have withstood the trials of times.  It is our hope this search will increase awareness of how valuable trees are to the eco-system.  We hope also, that the search will encourage citizens to become more involved with preserving trees in the urban forest as well as wooded areas in Tippecanoe County.  According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, a tree over a 50 year period, will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, and recycle $37,500 worth of water.

The Tippecanoe County Big Tree Register follows the Indiana DNR’s Big Tree Register guidelines.  Only trees native to Indiana will be considered for the register.  For reference to what is an Indiana native tree please refer to the list of trees on this website.

To nominate a big tree, follow the guidelines on the application form and send it to the Tippecanoe Co. Purdue Extension Office at 3150 Sagamore Parkway S., Lafayette, IN 47905-5156 or fax 765-474-5330.  Once the form has been received and reviewed, a Big Tree Register representative will be in contact with you.
