Pike County 4-H

What is 4-H?

Pike County 4-H consists of over 240 children participating in 14 local, family oriented 4-H clubs, supervised by 35 adult leaders and volunteers through out the entire year.  4-H is the largest youth serving organization in the country. It is a volunteer-led organization that reaches youth through a variety of programs in both rural and urban settings.  4-H provides fun, educational opportunities at the local, state, national, and international levels. The purpose of 4-H is to learn, citizenship, leadership, and community service.

4-H programs are hands-on, age-appropriate, and university-based. 4-H helps youth improve their self-confidence; learn subject matter; and develop important skills including leadership, citizenship, communication, and decision-making that can be applied over a lifetime.  For older teens, 4-H also offers opportunities to develop and test their leadership skills as 4-H volunteers and working with youth.

4-H programs are inclusive and open to everyone from 3rd to 12th grade. There are three different levels of membership in Pike County 4-H. They are: Future 4-H for those children in grades k through 2nd, Regular 4-H for children in grades 3 through 12, and 4-H Jr. Leaders for children in grades 7 through 12.   It is open to everyone, regardless of race, religion, color, sex or place of residence.  In clubs, individual groups may charge minimal dues to cover expenses, and some project areas may require extra investments for supplies, equipment, and travel.

In 2007, Pike County 4-H members exhibited over 400 projects during the Pike County 4-H Fair and Indiana State Fair. In 2007, Pike County 4-H members received 6 special merits for their projects at the Indiana State Fair.  There are 50 projects members can choose from ranging from Arts and Crafts to Veterinary Science, with Foods, Clothing, Livestock, Crops, Entomology (Insects), and dozens of other projects in between.

What is the 4-H emblem?
