WHAT IS MINI 4-H?

Mini 4-H is a program for youth who are in second grade at enrollment time. It is a one-year program designed = to encourage youth to join 4-H when they are in third grade.=

MINI 4-H ENROLLMENT

The enrollment for Mini 4-H should be completed by March 15 of the current year. Members must complete an enrollment form and sign up for one or two of the nine project areas.<= /o:p>

EXHIBIT REQUIREMENTS:

Mini 4-H'ers can participate in workbook activities in livestock projects but wi= ll not be allowed to show an animal at the Fair. Mini 4-H Record Sheets, Posters and Folders will be turned in with their projects at the fair. Name labels will be provided at th= e fair check-in. NOTE: All posters = for Mini 4-H projects are 14” x 22”.

Bicycle – Choose one:

Make poster (14” x 22”) on any of the activities in= the manual
Draw a picture of you and your bike based on one activity.
Take a picture of you and your bike. Add a picture of Traffic Sign= s. Label Bike parts. = Tell why it is important to wear a helmet.= Have pictures taken of you with your decorated bicycle and use = on poster.
Plan a short trip to the grocery store, to a friend’s hou= se, etc. Make a map showing = your route. Draw traffic sign= s, speed limits, danger points, corners, one way streets, etc. Include a picture of yourself= with your bicycle, things you need for your trip, and anything else you can imagine for your exhibit.
Write a story about you and your bicycle. Include all the things you an= d your friends can do with your bicycles.&nb= sp; You may want to add pictures to decorate your exhibit.

Collections – Choose one:<= /span>

Collect and exhibit 5 items or 5 pairs of items. These articles can be rocks, = coins, insects, salt and pepper shakers, pencils or any kind of fun collection. Attach a 3x5= inch card that tells what you are collecting and why you collected the item= s.
Go to a museum and look around at the collection of things. Write a short report on your visit. Here are some thi= ngs that you might want to put in your report:

a. Why do museums collect stuff? List some things that they collect.

b. Ask someone who works at a museum how they get things for the collection.

c. What is the best collection of items? What is the most unusual? (If a museum is not in your home a= rea, try a library.)

d. Talk to family and friends. Ask them what they like to collect and why they like to collect it.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Then make a chart to show your information.

Dinosaurs - Choose one:<= o:p>

Make a fossil cast. Use something that will make a fossil that might have been around 200 mill= ion year ago. (Example: bones, leaves, and twigs.)
Find four pictures of dinosaurs. Answer these questions for each picture. You can use the dinosaurs in this book. Put the pictures and informat= ion in a self-made notebook.

a. = Name of dinosaur

b. = Size of dinosaur

c. = Weight of dinosaur

d. = Type of dinosaur

Make a poster (14” x 22”) that shows how big dinosa= urs were. Draw pictures of yourself, your house, your school, and your favorite dinosaur. Answer these questions for ea= ch thing. – Name of thing - Size of thing
Make a model of your favorite dinosaur. You can use model materials o= f your choice.
Make a dino-time Dinorama.

a. = Find a large shoebox= .

b. = Paint the inside of = the box to look like the Earth when dinosaurs were alive.

c. = Put soil in the bott= om of the box. Put enough in to = make hills and swamps. You can use poster board painted blue for water. Collect rocks for you dinorama.

d. = Collect small twigs, leaves and other plants.

e. = Make models of dinos= aurs and put them in your box. You= can use poster board to add stiffness. Clay works too!

Make a model of your favorite dinosaur. Put your model on a flat surf= ace and add other items to make it look like it is standing in a swamp
Collect five types of plants that dinosaurs would be able to ea= t it they lived today. (Hint:= the plants that dinosaurs ate= did not have flowers.) Put t= he plants in a self-made notebook. Answer the following questions next to each plant.

a. = Name of plant

b. = Why a dinosaur would= eat it

c. = Where you found the plant

4-H Farm Animals – Choose one:

Write a story about your favorite farm animal=
Make a poster (14” x 22”) showing the different thi= ngs that farm animals make for us. (Example: hamburg= ers, wool, eggs, etc.)
Make a poster showing the different kinds of farm animals. You can use the pictures in Activity 1.
Talk to a farmer. Ask him questions about working on a farm, the farm animals he raises, and= the feed that he uses. You c= an ask him your own questions. = Write a story about the farmer.
Write or rewrite your favorite fair tale using farm animals (ex. Cinderella on the Farm)<= o:p>
Make a model of your favorite farm animal. If you want, add it to a farm= scene made in a shoebox. (See Activity 4)

Foods – Choose one:

1. = A peanut butter sand= wich cut into two or four pieces. = Use two slices of bread, peanut butter and your choice of an added ingredient.<= o:p>

2. = Popcorn snack displa= yed in a small plastic sandwich bag. Start with popped corn and add other ingredients to make it your own= .

3. = Two no bake cookies using recipe in your mini 4-H food book.

4. = Display a poster (14” x 22”) you made that shows the food pyramid.

5. = Two Marshmall= ow Treat squares using recipe in your mini 4-H food boo= k.

Forestry – Choose one:<= /span>

1. = Choose 1 of the 8 activities to exhibit. Next y= ear choose a different exhibit.

2. = Poster(14” x 22”) suggestions

a. = Poster board should = be displayed horizontally.

b. = Title should be at t= he top of the poster.

c. = Exhibit 5-7 items on= the poster.

3. = In some of the exhib= it activities, there is a choice of exhibits.= Choose one of the choices—both exhibits are not required.=

4. = Books may be made wi= th white paper for the activities and colored paper for the cover and back and stapled. There should be 5-7 = pages in the book.

Gardening – Choose one:<= /span>

Exhibit one plant in a pot (no larger than 10 inches in diameter). You must have= taken care of your plant for at least the last two months before judging. A chia pet you = have grown can be substituted for the potted plant.
A plant with a maximum of three vegetables.
Label each vegetable with its= name.
Exhibit 3 like vegetables on a paper plate.

Models – Choose one:<= /span>

2. = Make one snap togeth= er plastic model – Do not glue or paint your model

3. = Make a model made ou= t of clay or popsicle sticks

4. = Make a model using t= wo to four different items of your choice.&nb= sp; Examples; clay, toothpicks, sticks, ceramics, sugar cubes, etc.=

5. = Visit a museum and l= ook around at different models. W= rite a short report on your visit. H= ere are some things that you might want to put in your report:

b. = Ask someone who work= s at the museum how they build their models.&nb= sp; Or do they buy the models already done?

6. = Make a model using as many different items of your choice. Make a model background to display your model. Example: paint a shoebox so that s plastic m= odel car looks like it is driving down the road, across the field, through the w= ater or the air.

My Pet & Me – Exhibit:

Make your very own scrapbook or a poster (14= 221; x 22”) about your special pet. Inside you may want to put some these things:

Three cut flowers in a vase.&n= bsp; The flowers can be the same kind or different kinds. Attach a small label that tel= ls the kind of flower.

A house plant. At= tach a small label that tells the kind of plant.
Cacti. Attach a s= mall label that tells the kid of cacti.
Exhibit a colored flower. (See Activity 6 for directions.)
Make a poster (14” x 22”) that shows the different parts of a plant.
Find at least three pictures of flowers. Write the name of the flower = next to it. You can use the f= lowers in this book. Put the pi= ctures in a self-made notebook.
Make a plant maze. Bring a shoebox maze with a plant inside. (See Activity 3 for direction= s.)

Sewing – Choose one:<= /span>

Sewing Kit – Project A.&= nbsp; You may want to include a few items in your sewing kit that you will be using with your future sewing project.
Pin Cushion – Project B.
Kool Cat and Honey Bear – Project C.
Machine Practice Pages – Project D. Attach your practice pages to= a poster (14” x 22”) according to your county poster requirements.
Throw Pillow – Project E. Exhibit one pillow that you h= ave made.

Sun, Stars & Space – Choose one:=

Make a solar system mobile.&nb= sp; You may use any materials that you want. Make sure that you label each planet.
Exhibit the asteroid that you made in Activity 3.
Exhibit the comet that you made in Activity 4.
Make a model or poster (14” x 22”) of the shuttle.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Label the main parts of the shuttle.
Make a poster showing one or two different constellations. You can use the ones in the m= anual or can find new ones.
Make a poster about one or two different planets. Label the planets and tell something about them. Yo= u can use the information in this manual or find your own.=
Make a poster about Planet X.&= nbsp; Be creative. If y= ou were going to visit this planet. What would you find?

Whales & Dolphins – Choose one:=
