Consumer and Family Sciences



Money Management

Financial Stability, Safety, and Security
Individuals, families and business in Marion County will make
more informed decisions with respect to their personal and
business finances.

Managing money effectively to meet present needs and future
goals is a learned skill. Working as learning partners with
adult and youth, as individual and families, the Cooperative
Extension System has the capacity and expertise to be a key
contributor to a financially literate America.

As a result of money management education, individuals and
families achieve financial stability leading to financial security
and higher levels of satisfaction. Desired outcomes have related
performance goals, which can be measured by a variety of indicators

Desired Outcome: Financial Stability

Performance Goal: Ability to meet short-term (day-to-day)
financial obligations.

Indicators: Examples include:
     Use of appropriate community resources
     Initiate the savings habit
     Set or revise spending and savings goals
     Set up a system for paying bills on time
     Establish an emergency fund equal to 3-6 months'
     living expenses

Volunteer Money Mentor with Purdue Extension -
     Marion County is designed to train volunteers in 12
     hours of educational activities to assist individuals and
     families in becoming financially stable.

Desired Outcome: Financial Security

Performance Goal: Ability to meet long-term (future) needs
(i.e., financing children's education, assuring good health,
providing for a secure retirement, building an estate).

Indicators: Examples include:
     Save on a regular basis or increase regular savings
     Identify and/or reduce money leaks in spending
     Determine retirement and/or future income needs
     and how to meet them
     Understand legal liability and protections regarding
     the use of credit and debit cards
     Establish and revise investment goals
     Discuss financial matters with other family members

Programs to address financial security include:

     Indy Saves (www.indysaves.org/ ) is an Indianapolis
     campaign to build wealth by increasing savings and/or
     reducing debt.  Indy Saves is part of the America Saves
      (www.americasaves.org ) national campaign to build
     wealth, not debt.

Nutrition, Health, & Wellness

Marion County Extension will provide education to inform and empower all county residents to make food choices and implement nutrition and physical activity practices that improve health.  This is accomplished through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

Intended outcomes as a result of Extension efforts:

  • Increased awareness and knowledge of the direct relationship between food choices and physical activity and the risk of developing chronic diseases as demonstrated by following the Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Improved food resources management practices, food preparation, and food safety habits to better utilize limited economic resources.
  • Healthy weight gain, improved food choices and improved lifestyle choices during pregnancy.


Food Safety

Marion County Extension will strengthen and develop collaborative efforts to improve the safety and quality of the food supply in Marion County.
  • Enhance and develop safe food handling practices from farm to plate.
  • Increase consumer awareness and knowledge concerning importance of proper food handling.
  • Facilitate more informed consumer decisions on issues of food safety and quality.
  • Minimize business losses within the food industry related to food safety problems or issues.

Parenting

The Marion County Office of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service will provide educational programming to adults and youth to strengthen families.

Efforts in Marion County will:

  • Provide resources to improve parenting organizations.
  • Develop partnerships with parenting organizations.
  • Reduce child abuse related to to poor parenting.
