Our Success Stories - Lawrence County
- A single mother of two who did not have enough money and food stamps to last throughout the month signed up for the Family Nutrition Program. After completing lessons on budgeting, meal planning, and saving money at the store, the mother had the knowledge and confidence to stretch her dollars throughout the month. The following month she did not have to use a local food pantry and she had plenty of food stamps to buy groceries for her family.
Eat Your Way to Better Health is a school enrichment program focused on changing attitudes about science, nutrition, and agricultural awareness. We had forty-four third grade students participate in the program. The students learned to plant and care for their own garden, learned about the food pyramid, and were given the opportunities to try several fruits and vegetables. One student said that tasting new vegetables was Rockin Awesome. Several of the students plan to work with their parents and have a garden at home. - Due to a recent plant closing in Bedford, it was necessary to relocate the 9-11 monument. Lawrence County Master Gardeners were asked to assist in development of a relocation site at one of the Bedford Fire Stations. Master Gardeners worked with fire department personnel and local youth from the area to prepare and implement plans for the relocation, landscaping and upkeep of the monument. This project brought together the City of Bedford, The Bedford Parks Department, The Bedford Fire Department, the Master Gardeners and youth from the surrounding community cooperating to accomplish a goal. The monument was in place for the rededication ceremony on 9-11-2008
