What Is 4-H?

4-H is an extracurricular, volunteer-led, family-oriented program.

4-H has activities for young people in grades 3 through 12.  Children in kindergarten through grade 2 can participate in a special program called Mini 4-H.

4-H is for urban as well as rural youth.

4-H helps young people develop life skills:

    -Building self-confidence.

-Developing an inquiring mind and making decisions.

    -Setting and meeting goals.

    -Relating to other people.

-Developing a concern for the community.

    -Developing leadership skills.

4-H is an opportunity for fun with friends at meetings, social events, tours, trips, camps, and fairs.  4-H projects provide learning experiences for members.  4-H members can exhibit their work at the Lake County Fair. They can earn awards and scholarships.

In Indiana, 4-H is part of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service.  Nationally, it is part of the Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.  In Lake County, leadership is provided by Purdue Extension's 4-H Youth Development Educators and 4-H volunteers.  The program is supported financially by county, state, and federal tax dollars.

The 4-H emblem is the four-leaf clover with the letter H on each leaf.  The Hs refer to the 4-H Pledge:   "I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world."

How Can We Join 4-H?

Call the Purdue Extension office at 755-3240 or email lake4hinfo@purdue.edu  to find a club near you.  We can give you more information about 4-H projects and activities.  Members need to fill out an enrollment form each year.

4-H also has opportunities for adults.  4-H needs volunteers who can assist with existing clubs, use their expertise or resources to help with 4-H projects, or organize new clubs for young people in their neighborhoods, schools, etc. All volunteers go through a screening process, including a background check, before working with 4-H members.
