Lake County 4-H Projects - Lake County

 

 

The following is an introduction to the projects you may take if you enroll in Lake County 4-H.  Please note that the descriptions listed below are general descriptions of the beginning divisions and are not intended to serve as an overall description of the entire project.  Also, this list changes from year to year, as some projects are dropped and others added.  See the current 4-H Handbook for an up-to-date list of projects and details about their requirements and options.  If there is ever a discrepancy between this summary and the description in the Handbook, you should follow the rules in the Handbook.

 

Animal projects are open to everyone.  Owning an animal is not required.  4-H members are allowed to lease animals, or they can choose to create an educational exhibit (poster, diorama, or display) that demonstrates what they have learned.  Members who plan to exhibit animals at the Fair should pay careful attention to the schedule in the front of the 4-H Handbook. 

 

AEROSPACE

Build a model rocket or make a poster.

AQUATIC SCIENCE

Make a poster or bring your tropical fish to the fair (fish return home the same day).

ARTIFICIAL FLORAL DESIGN

Make a floral arrangement from artificial or dried flowers.

BASIC CRAFT OTHER

Create a craft that does not fit under any of the other craft project categories, such as beadwork, stained glass, etc.

BASKETRY

Weave a basket from reed. 

BEEF

Learn how to care for beef animals and to keep records.  Bring your animal to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit.

CAKE DECORATING TRADITIONAL

Decorate a cake to exhibit at the fair.

CAKE DECORATING w/o TIPS

Decorate your cake with candies, coconut, etc.

CAT

Show your cat at the Cat Show.  You can also make a poster and/or notebook. 

CERAMICS-HAND

Use your hands to manipulate clay and make an object. 

CERAMICS-POURED

Make a poured ceramic flower pot, mug, spoonholder, etc. 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Learn how to care for children.  Make a poster, notebook, or display. 

COLLECTIONS

Exhibit three pieces of your collection and a notebook.  Valuable items should be taken home after judging.

COMPUTER

Learn about computers.  Make a poster or notebook report or give an action demonstration.

CONSUMER CLOTHING

Learn to make good decisions when you buy clothes.  Exhibit a notebook with activities from the manual and model an outfit for judging.

CONSUMER MEATS

Exhibit a poster identifying cuts of meat.  Higher levels research nutrients, recipes, costs, etc. of beef, lamb, and pork. 

CREATIVE WRITING

Write stories, essays, poetry, comic strips, and more.  Exhibit a notebook of your work.

DAIRY

Learn how to care for dairy animals and to keep records.  Bring your animal to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit or deliver an action demonstration. 

DAIRY STEER

Learn how to care for dairy steers and to keep records.  Bring your steer to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit or promotional piece.

DOG

Train and show a dog, prepare an educational display, and/or deliver an action demonstration. 

ELECTRIC

Find out what electricity is and how to use it safely.  Make an electrical item (circuit board, flashlight, lamp, etc.) or a poster. 

ENTOMOLOGY

Collect different insects, learn their names, and exhibit them at the Fair.  You can also make a poster about insects. 

EXPLORING THROUGH BOOKS

Read and talk about books.  Make a poster or miniature structure about a favorite book. 

FARM MODELS

Create a realistic model of a farm using manufactured or custom built farm toys on a plywood base. 

FINE ARTS

Express yourself through painting and drawing.  Exhibit your picture.

FITNESS & SPORTS

Make a poster about a sport, explaining the rules of the game, fitness health, or safety precautions. 

FLORICULTURE

Learn about and exhibit flowers you have grown or purchased.  You can also make a poster or notebook. 

FOODS

Find out about nutrition and how to make things your family will love to sample. Present what you have baked or preserved. 

FORESTRY

Learn about trees, wood and its uses, and much more.  Exhibit a poster. 

GARDEN

Grow and exhibit vegetables or herbs.  You can also make an educational poster.

GENEALOGY

Trace your family history and learn more about your ancestors.  Your exhibit is a notebook. 

GEOLOGY

Learn more about different rocks and minerals.  Prepare a poster or display box for the Fair.

GIFT WRAPPING

Find creative ways to wrap gifts using a variety of papers, trims, ribbons, and bows.   Exhibit a package you have wrapped.

GOAT

Learn how to care for goats and to keep records.  Bring your goat to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit.

HEALTH

Explore health practices and careers.  Prepare posters and first aid kits and deliver action demonstrations.   

HISTORY FOR FUN

Complete a logbook of activities and prepare an exhibit about a historical topic.  Options include dioramas, video presentations, posters, and more. 

HOME ENVIRONMENT

Explore ways to make your living area more attractive.  Exhibit a notebook and hanging or storage item.

HORSE & PONY

Participate in a variety of activities for 4-H members that own or lease horses or ponies. 

HORSE EXPLORERS

You can learn about horses even if you don't have a horse.  You will participate in activities and workshops and make a poster. 

LATCH HOOK

Make and exhibit a stuffed pillow, rug, wall-hanging, etc. 

LEATHER

Make and exhibit a leather item, using stamping tools, lacing, etc. 

LEGO

Create a vehicle, structure, or other object out of LEGO or similar-style building blocks. 

MICROWAVE COOKING

Learn how to make snacks, desserts, and more in the microwave.  Exhibit food you've prepared.   

MODELS

Make and exhibit a model car, airplane, etc.

MUSIC

Learn about music.  You can choose to perform or to make an educational poster. 

NEEDLECRAFT

Make and exhibit a needlecraft item.

NEEDLECRAFT OTHER

This project includes candlewicking, crewel, and other techniques.  See the Handbook for a complete explanation. 

PERSONALITY

Get to know yourself and those around you better.  Your exhibit will be a poster.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn to take great pictures.  Your exhibit will be a display of pictures you have taken. 

PLASTERCRAFT/RESIN

Stain or paint and add protective finish to a plastercraft or resin item.   

POULTRY

Learn to care for poultry and keep records.  Bring your poultry to the Fair. You can also display an educational exhibit. 

RABBIT

Learn to care for rabbits and keep records.  Exhibit your rabbit at the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit.

RECLAIMED TREASURES

Restore a piece of furniture or other item.  Include a "before" picture with your exhibit. 

SCRAPBOOKING

Preserve your memories in a scrapbook with photographs, memorabilia, and journaling. 

SEWING

Learn to sew.  Make and exhibit wearable or non-wearable items.  You can also deliver an action demonstration.

SHEEP

Learn to care for sheep and keep records.  Bring your sheep to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit.

SMALL ANIMALS

Learn to care for guinea pigs, reptiles, amphibians, birds, gerbils, etc.  Show your animal at the Fair (and take it home the same day).  You can also display an educational exhibit. 

SOFT DOLLS & TOYS

Sew a doll or toy animal. 

SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION

Learn about conserving our soil and water resources.  Make a poster, display, or videotape about what you have learned. 

SPORTSFISHING

Learn about fish and how to catch them.  Exhibit a poster at the Fair. 

SWINE

Learn to care for swine and keep records.  Bring your pig to the Fair.  You can also display an educational exhibit. 

TABLE SETTING

Create and display an attractive table setting for one person using items from your home. 

TRACTOR

Learn to care for and safely operate a garden and/or farm tractor in a series of workshops.  Participate in the tractor contest (parts identification, written quiz and driving course) or make a poster about tractor safety.   Owning a tractor is not required.  Driving is optional.

1/16 MODEL TRACTOR PULLING

Participate using an electric powered pulling tractor in a series of workshops. 

VETERINARY SCIENCE

Learn about animal health and disease.  Your exhibit will be a poster. 

WEARABLE ART

Creatively decorate an accessory or article of clothing. 

WEATHER

Learn how to observe the weather and record what you observe.  Your exhibit will be a poster or scrapbook. 

WEEDS

Collect and identify common weeds of Indiana.  Exhibit your collection.

WILDLIFE

Learn about wild animals and their habitats.  Exhibit a poster.

WOODWORKING

Learn to use tools safely and build things with wood.  You will exhibit an item you have made or a poster. 

WREATHS

Construct a wreath to hang on a wall or door.  Display it at the Fair.
