What is 4-H?

4-H is the largest youth serving organization in the United States. It is a volunteer-led organization that reaches youth through a variety of programs in both rural and urban settings.

4-H members learn by completing projects and activities in any area of interest to them. This "learn by doing" educational approach helps youth develop life skills such as responsibility, leadership, confidence, and communication.

4-H clubs offer a welcoming group setting for 4-H youth to work, learn, and play together, under the supervision of adult leaders. 4-H members join either local or county-wide specialty clubs. The local clubs bring together members who are involved in a variety of projects. The county-wide clubs focus on a particular project, such as Horse and Pony, but members may also pursue other projects. In addition to clubs many other activities such as camps, contests, tours, fairs, and state-wide events are available for 4-H youth to participate in. These activities are designed to supplement club and project experiences and provide opportunities to meet 4-H members from other clubs, communities, counties, and states.

Who Can Join 4-H?

4-H is for anyone and everyone in grades 3-12.

It is the policy of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, David C. Petritz, Director, that all persons shall have equal opportunity and access to the programs and facilities without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, or disability. Purdue University is an Affirmative Action employer.

How Do I Join 4-H?

Contact the Hendricks County Extension Office at 1900 East Main Street, P.O. Box 7, Danville IN 46122, Phone: (317) 745-9260, FAX: (317) 745-9267

You must fill out an official Hendricks County enrollment form (by March 1st) and return it to the Extension Office.  The Annual 4-H Enrollment Fair is usually conducted on the 2nd Sunday of February, 2-4 p.m. in the Hendricks Power Expo Hall.  This is a great time to sign up, meet 4-H leaders, learn about various projects and purchase 4-H manuals/materials.

If you don't know which 4-H club you want to join, the office will match you up with a club in your township or community and help you to contact the club leader.

4-H Administration

Nationally 4-H is part of the Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. In Indiana, 4-H is part of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service. Local leadership is provided by 4-H Youth Extension Educators, Program Assistants and volunteer leaders.
