Victory Garden - Hancock County
Welcome to the Purdue Extension Hancock County
Victory Garden Project
You can do it, we can help!
During the food shortages of World War II our government encouraged all Americans to grow gardens - Victory Gardens - to help feed a hungry nation and help ensure an Allied victory. And grow them they did, from back yards to rooftops to courthouse lawns.
The Cooperative Extension Service, with a sponsoring land grant university in every state, was instrumental in the success of the Victory Gardens program by providing free education to all about gardening, cooking and preserving the all-important produce from those gardens.
Today we face a similar crisis. Many folks have lost their jobs and the means to properly feed their families. In response, the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Hancock County has launched a Victory Garden program to teach, mentor and otherwise encourage folks to garden once again to help feed themselves and their neighbors.
We ask you this: Why mow when you can grow? You can do it! Purdue Extension can help!
We offer free classes, information and advice. We have made several garden designs from small to large to help you get started. We have also partnered with five local greenhouses that also offer helpful advice and a free tomato plant for the first 50 people to sign up for the free Victory Garden program. We can even help you find discounts for rototilling services.
For more information please call our office at 462-1113. Office hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
