Chlorophyll:
Why Plants Always Wear Green
St. Patrick's Day seems to bring out the "wearin'
o' the green" among human folk. But plants wear their green throughout
the year, and it is the green that makes plants such unique life forms.
Plants get their green color from a pigment called chlorophyll.
Why
Plants Fail to Bloom
Flowering plants that don't bloom as promised can be a big disappointment
in your garden. Reasons for lack of blooming are as diverse as the palette
of plants from which to choose, but a little detective work can usually
pinpoint the trouble. The most common factors associated with blooming
are light, plant age, nutrition, and more.
Spring
Pruning of Roses
Late March to early April is the time to prepare your garden roses for
the coming growing season. Winter mulch and foam covers should be removed
as soon as new growth becomes apparent. Since a late freeze is still possible,
it's a good idea to keep the winter mulch nearby for quick protection.
Pruning
Tool Should Fit the Job
Many landscape plants will require pruning at some stage of their life
Plants may need to be pruned to:
- reduce or maintain plant size
- remove dead or damaged material
- reduce overcrowding
- rejuvenate older, overgrown plants
produce more flowering, fruiting and/or leaf canopy
Using the right tool for the job will help protect both
plant and human. Read more about pruning or print pages from this hand
out listed to the right.
