Fire
Up for Hot Peppers
Chilly days call for warming up with a steaming bowl
of hot chili. And we can thank the peppers known botanically as Capsicum
for that warm sensation. The source of that fiery sensation is a group
of naturally occurring chemicals called "capsaicins." The effects of the
capsaicins have been described as delivering rapid bites to the back of
the palate or a slow burn on the tongue and mid palate.
Pick
a Peck of Purple Peppers
Ever wonder why those colorful red, yellow and purple
peppers fetch such a high price at the produce market? Why are green peppers
so much less expensive?
Pollination
Is Essential in Home Orchards
If growing your own fruit is in your landscape plan, you'll need to make
sure you've provided an adequate opportunity for pollination to occur.
In most cases, you will need to plant at least two of each type of fruit
tree.
Some
Like It Hot, but Some Do Not!
Some like it hot, but many vegetable crops are best adapted to cool soil
and air temperatures. Cool-season crops, such as lettuce, potatoes, peas,
cauliflower and onions, actually prefer the cool, moist conditions of
spring to hot, dry summer weather.
Gardening
Tips for Beginners
Good planning is essential to successful gardening. Start your garden
off right by selecting the right location that receives plenty of direct
sunlight and has good drainage. Try to steer clear of trees and shrubs
that would compete with your garden plants for water, light and nutrients.
