The Girls Incorporated of Indianapolis Martin Luther King Peace Garden was alive with activity this summer. Girls, ages 6-8, planted seeds, weeded, watered and watched intently for signs of ripening vegetables.
A weather station complete with instruments and gauges was built and set up in the garden. As girls measured and graphed temperature, wind speed and rainfall, they noticed the drought conditions and how it affected our plants.
A group of tall standing sunflowers planted too close to the picnic tables seemed to attract many bees, which led to discussions about human and animal cohabitation. Towards the end of the summer, girls planned and held an open house for parents and community members. Visitors were able to tour the garden, play garden games and sample vegetables.
Anyone wishing to tour the garden may call 637-2023 for more information. We are located at 1125 Spruce Street in Fountain Square.
