John Morton's not-for-profit community food security project, Field of Greens, was again successfully planted 8 to 9 lots with mustard and turnip crops free for the picking. This group works to turn vacant lots into food producing ones in Indianapolis' inner city neighborhoods. Marvin King does the farming for them and John says they usually get about 2 crops in each year.
Last fall they also completed two very successful lot cleanup projects at 32nd and Guilford and 3043 N. Ruckle. Mike Aiken Landscaping donated the heavy equipment and, with lots of help, they were able to fill an entire industrial size dumpster with refuse.
John says the lots have stayed relatively clean.
As if all this weren't enough John also hosted a Field of Greens Fundraising golf tournament at Riverside Park. Money raised will go to the continued operation of the Field of Greens project.
