Tomatoes! Tomatoes! Tomatoes! This year’s crop was enough to feed all the Concord day campers and seniors for most of the summer with some still left over. We also planted cucumbers, zucchini, green peppers, green onions, pumpkins, green beans and hot peppers. Many different flowers were planted from seeds and grew into gorgeous blooming plants. Watering the garden became the biggest challenge early in the summer.
On July 7, a hydrant was installed so we could water the garden with a sprinkler. Watering helped the vegetables and flowers to grow, but unfortunately watering the garden also helped the weeds to grow.
Weeding was the second largest challenge of the summer. Very hot days sent Troop Six out first thing in the morning to weed. At first, the children had a hard time distinguishing between what was a plant and what was a weed.
In about an hour, the children had weeded the whole garden. Hot, thirsty, and tired we would gather our tools and return to the Concord Center.
On the days we did not weed, we would pick vegetables. The children were able to see what all their hard work had produced.
