Marion County Master Gardener Association: Programs for 2008

  • January 14, 2008: What's New for 2008? - Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, will cover what is new in plants, information and the Master Gardener program.
  • February 11, 2008: Ideas for Landscaping your Outdoor Living Space - Karen Arwood, Progressive Lawnscaping, LLC, will remind us of the basics of landscape design by showing options for outdoor living areas. Karen earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Purdue University and later took additional courses in Landscape Design. After teaching school for seven years, she started Progressive Lawnscaping, LLC with her business partner, Kelly Dennis.
  • March 10, 2008: Preparing for Summer Drought: Xeriscaping Basics, Rain Barrels, and Drip Irrigation - Matthew Jose, Urban Garden Program Assistant, Purdue Extension-Marion County and MG Karen Kennedy

  • January 8, 2007 - What's New for 2007? - Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, will cover what is new in plants and products for the garden.
  • February 12, 2007 - Plant Propagation (TOUR) - Join Horticulturalist Elizabeth Garvey at the Indiana School for the Blind greenhouse for a class on propagation of plants. Bring a folding lawn chair. Houseplants will be available for sale.
  • March 12, 2007 - Nature Photography - Kevin Carlsen will show how to take photos of nature and your garden. Bring your own photos to be critiqued.
  • April 9, 2007 - Restoring the American Classic - Sally Weeks, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources,Purdue University, will speak on the restoration of the American Chestnut Tree.
  • May 14, 2007 - Annual Plant Sale for Marion County Master Gardener Association members.
  • June 11, 2007 - Native Plants and Summer Wildflowers - Master Gardeners and INPAWS members Dan and Sophia Anderson will speak.
  • July 9, 2007 - TOUR of Member's Gardens - Visit the gardens of Master Gardener's Karen Kennedy, Marion Harcourt and Debbie Clark.
  • August 13, 2007 - TOUR of Irwin Gardens in Columbus, Indiana and Elsbury's Greenhouses.

    Special Evening Meeting:
  • September 19, 2007, 6:00-8:30pm - Evening in the Garden - Betty Earl speaks on Those Brazen Hussies (Prima-Donna plants no garden should be without). Open to all Marion County Master Gardeners and Interns. RSVP no later than September 10, 2007. Click on the above link for details.
  • October 8, 2007 - Hostas - Master Gardener and Indianapolis Hosta Society member Bill Ward will speak on hosta growing and the gardens at the National Hosta Convention.
  • November 12, 2007 - Garden Tools, Gadgets and Gizmos - Learn from Master Gardener Debbie Clark on how to maintain garden equipment and see what's new in garden products and equipment to make gardening easier.

  • January 9, 2006 - What's New? Find out about new plants, garden products and methods by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County.
  • February 13, 2006, 10:00am - TOUR at Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Gardens. Learn about: the garden history, orchids, and preview "Sweets for Your Sweetie" from the cacao tree by Mary Hayes and Fritz Nerding.
  • March 13, 2006 - Woody Plants Worthy of Small Spaces by Jo Ellen Meyers-Sharp, Advanced Master Gardener, co-author of The Indiana Gardener's Guide Revised Edition, regular contributor to Too Many Cooks! at 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays on WICR-FM (88.7), and freelance writer.
  • April 10, 2006 - Backyard Ponds: Design, Building, Plants, Water Quality and Wildlife Habitat by Master Gardener and Indiana Koi and Water Garden Club member Karen Jensen (optional tour after the program).
  • May 8, 2006 - Master Gardener Annual Plant Sale (for members only). This is the yearly fundraiser. Big ticket items will be auctioned. Sale followed by optional tailgate pitch-in lunch at Intech Park Shelter and an optional after-lunch tour of the Governor's Residence grounds led by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture.
  • June 12, 2006, 10:00am - TOUR at Oliver Winery and Grounds with picnic on the lovely landscaped grounds (bring your own lunch or purchase at Oliver). This is followed by an OPTIONAL DAY OF ADVENTURE on the way back to Indianapolis: Willowfield Lavender Farm and Sparks Iris/Daylily Garden.
  • July 10, 2006 - Creating Monarch Wayside Gardens by Ann and Robert Richardson (Monarch Waystation Program)
  • August 14, 2006 - Bodacious Bog Beds by Sue Arnold, Advanced Master Gardener and President, Marion County Master Gardener Association.
  • September 11, 2006 - "Share the Bounty" TOUR at the Spurgeon Farm by Marilyn and Charles Spurgeon, Advanced Master Gardeners. Bring your own garden vegetables, nuts, flowers to swap as we Share the Bounty.
  • Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - THIRD ANNUAL EVENING MEETING: Starting time: 5:30pm with program beginning at 7:00pm: More Great Ideas for Native Plant Gardening by Carolyn Harstad, Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204
  • October 9, 2006 - Making Your Winter Garden Wildlife Friendly by Lynn Jenkins (web page) of Nature's Garden in Zionsville. Lynn is an Advanced Master Gardener, writer, naturalist and speaker.
  • November 13, 2006 - Hobby Greenhouses by Jim Barbour, Extension Educator-Commercial Horticulture, and Master Gardener association members Debbie Clark, Karen Kennedy and Barbara Jablonski.
  • December 11, 2006 - Natural Holiday Arrangements & Party - Patti Lacey of Nature Inspired will create natural holiday arrangements that will be auctioned.

  • January 10, 2005 - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Gourds by Master Gardener Bill Taylor.
  • February 14, 2005 - Blooms Around the House and More! by Hank Stevens, Advanced Master Gardener and past president of the Marion County Master Gardener Association.
  • March 14, 2005 - Planning and Harvesting Your Edible Garden by Brandt Carter.
  • April 11, 2005 - TOUR at Heartland Growers followed by a brown bag picnic at Cool Creek Park (drinks will be provided). A wildflower walk will be conducted for those who can stay.
  • May 9, 2005 - Master Gardener Plant Sale (for members only). This is the yearly fundraiser. Big ticket items will be auctioned.
  • June 13, 2005 - Restoration of a Rare Groundwater Wetland, by Dr. Lenore Tedesco, IUPUI.
  • July 11, 2005 - TOUR at Trader's Point Creamery and Garden (Trader's Point Creamery)
  • August 8, 2005 - TOUR at IMA Gardens & Grounds. The greenhouse will be open for inspection and business if you wish to view and/or buy. (Indianapolis Museum of Art)
  • September 12, 2005 - Woodland Gardens by Chris Turner (designing for interest in wet and dry shade)

    Marion County Master Gardener Association: 2004 Programs

  • January 12, 2004 - Updates by Star Academy and Steve Mayer: Star Academy students make a presentation highlighting their trip to the national horticulture judging contest. Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, updates members on "The Master Gardener Program-Then and Now."
  • February 9, 2005 - Native Spring Wildflowers by Colletta Kosiba: Colletta is a charter member of the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society, a Hendricks County Advanced Master Gardener and a naturalist at Eagle Creek Park. She is a frequent speaker at Indianapolis area gardening events.
  • March 8, 2004 - Beautiful, Bountiful British Botanicals by Marnie Wilken: One of our members will present a photo journey through many noted gardens of Britain including The Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh, the new National Garden of Wales, Wisley Gardens, Sissinghurst, Great Dixter and others.
  • April 12, 2004 - Creative Container Gardens by Master Gardeners: Three Master Gardeners will share their ideas on the subject.
  • May 10, 2004 - Plant Sale (For Members Only)
  • June 14, 2004 - Indianapolis Zoo Horticulture Tour: Three zoo areas will be toured (Deserts, Plains and Forests) with the gardener in charge of each area. Specific topics include cactus and related plants and bamboo.
  • July 12, 2004 - Tour Gardens of Dottie Mullennax and Sue Arnold: This will be a tour in the Eagle Creek area in the personal gardens of Marion County Master Gardener Association members. Enjoy hospitality on Sue's deck, planned by Kathy Hull, Sue and Dottie.
  • August 9, 2004 - Growing Orchids at Home by Dick Wells: Dick is from Hilltop Orchids. There will be special give-aways and door prizes!
  • September 13, 2004 - Shade Gardening by Geoff VonBurg: Geoff is an Indianapolis Museum of Art Horticulturist. He has agreed to address all of the shade gardening topics that were suggested for 2004! This will include some design information.
  • September 29, 2004 - SPECIAL FIRST ANNUAL EVENING MEETING: 6:00pm-7:00pm, Open House; 7:00-8:15pm, Program; Purdue Extension-Marion County office.
  • October 11, 2004 - Medicinal Plant Garden at the Indiana Medical History Museum by Kathy Hull: Kathy is a member of the Marion County Master Gardener Association. She provides the leadership for this garden.
  • November 8, 2004 - Invasive and Exotic Species in Indiana by Ellen Jacquart: Ellen is with The Nature Conservancy.
