How do I become a Master Gardener?

To become a Master Gardener in Marion County, you must fulfill 3 requirements:
1) Attend all Master Gardener class sessions (or watch a substitute videotape).
2) Obtain a score of at least 70% on the final exam.
3) Complete 50 or more hours of approved volunteer service within one year of completing the training.
Once you have completed your volunteer commitment, you will be certified as a Purdue Extension Master Gardener by Purdue University.

What topics are covered in Marion County Master Gardener classes?

The Purdue Master Gardener Program in Marion County offers 50 hours of classroom instruction on gardening related topics in exchange for a donation of 50 volunteer hours to help teach others what you have learned. The Marion County classes consist of 18 3-hour sessions on the following topics: plant science, soils & fertilizers, pests & pest management (insects, diseases, animals, weeds), plant problem diagnosis, pesticide use & safety, home lawn care, growing vegetables, trees & shrubs, annual & perennial flowers, flowering bulbs & ornamental grasses, home landscape design, growing fruit, landscape planting & maintenance, pruning trees & shrubs, indoor plant care and information on potential volunteer opportunities. Participants also learn how to find reliable answers to gardening questions using the Internet and other resources. Most class sessions are in a lecture format with the opportunity to ask questions. Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, provides most of the instruction. An optional garden tour is also conducted.

When and where are Marion County Master Gardener classes held?

Purdue Master Gardener classes in Marion County are usually held during late winter/early spring (January-April) and in the fall (mid-September to early December). Classes are often scheduled to meet twice a week. You can sign up for either day or evening classes. Master Gardener classes may be held at the Purdue Extension-Marion County office (6640 Intech Blvd., Suite 120, Indianapolis, IN 46278) or at other locations in Marion County.

The instruction for Master Gardener classes is provided free. However, a registration fee is charged to cover class materials. The fee is currently $95.00 per person in Marion County ($50.00 for the second person from the same household if class materials are shared). Participants also agree to volunteer 50 hours helping others grow.
