FFA Volunteer Opportunities for Master Gardeners
National FFA Center Garden Maintenance
By Kathie Lane
The National FFA would like to provide the opportunity for Master Gardeners to earn volunteer hours. We are in need for seasonal help with maintaining the gardens. Over the past two years, the gardens have been renovated and many of you participated with the plantings. Now we are at the stage of maintenance which will include weeding, deadheading, splitting and filling of holes in the gardens. We have recently added a cut flower garden in the rear of the building which needs thinning and weeding.
I have been maintaining the gardens, but due to circumstances, volunteers are now needed to help with maintenance of the gardens for the rest of this season. We are located behind Dicks in the Traders Point Shopping Center on W. 86th Street. The gardens could be managed with one or two volunteers once a week based on what needs to be done. You would be able to get plenty of volunteer hours. I would like to have volunteers commit to at least two or three times a month. This year will be the first year for Indianapolis to host the National Convention in October. I would like to see the gardens looking their very best. I believe once you start working in the FFA gardens you will be impacted by their beauty and maybe become a little possessive like myself. My plan would be to acknowledge your time and effort by placing a sign indicating Master Gardener's participation.
Some additional information that might be of interest is the National FFA Center is a non-profit organization participating with the National Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. To get full certification, we have to become certified in five areas: Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat, Resource Conservation, Energy Conservation and Outreach and Education. We have been awarded certifications in Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat and have completed the Resource Conservation section awaiting certification.
If you could find the time to volunteer this season, it would be much appreciated. If you would need Saturdays available, I would be able to work that out for you. Thank you for your consideration.
