4-H Embryology in the Classroom

The Embryology in the Classroom program/available fertile eggs has come to an end for spring 2009... Fertile eggs are no longer available that would suit the balance of school calendars. One option for you to consider is Strombergs (mail-order)

Also, while fertile eggs are generally a spring availability, if you are interested in obtaining fertile eggs in early fall please contact Jeff Jones or call 275-9305 ext. 268. to see if they are available... THANKS!

Welcome to the Marion County 4-H Chicken Embryology Project. This is an excellent way for students to learn about embryonic development and experience chicks hatching from eggs.

Possible Topics to Cover Using the Incubators in the Classroom Program:

  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts/English
  • Social Studies
  • Character Education
  • Science

Teacher Responsibilities:

While using this incubation project, there are endless opportunities you could choose to explore. You can do many things in your classroom to help your students fully understand what is happening before their eyes. In order for this miracle of life to occur, there are things that must happen every day.

The teacher:

  • Secures an incubator and plans for the necessary student care of the eggs' environmental needs. (Loaner-incubators are not available)
  • Maintains incubation conditions (i.e. temperature and humidity) within the incubator.
  • Finds a good home for the chicks after they are hatched. It is not recommended that the students take one home.
Thank you for your interest in the 4-H Embryologyin the Classroom program. We look forward to working with you and your students throughout the school year.
